In 2012 Fred began the first of several pilgrim journeys, two of which are published. The first, “Basho and I Take a Long Walk,” describes his experience along the Kumano Kodo in Japan as if he were walking with the great poet himself. In those famous journeys, Basho shares his haiku along with those of his travel partners. So Fred pairs his haiku with those of Basho as he walks the remote path through the Kii Peninsula to the Nachi Taisha shrine.
With this account Fred pairs a second ‘inverse’ pilgrimage in which he sets out to compose a haiku a day as a spiritual exercise in finding the distinct and memorable in daily life.
Second was walking from Selma AL to Montgomery AL in 2019, to honor those who were there in 1965, including a UU minister, James Reeb. It was published in 2024 under the title, Long Time Coming: A Pilgrimage of Race.
